ISES Tri-State Chapter Student Travel Award Program

 

Award Information

The purpose of this program is to increase incentive for Chapter membership, benefit students who want to attend and present at the annual ISES conference, and increase Chapter visibility by encouraging local student participation at the annual meeting.

  1. Award Information
    1. A $300 reimbursement for travel related and/or conference attendance costs will be awarded to one student. Depending on availability of funds, this competition will be held annually.
  2. Eligibility Criteria
    1. Student and/or student’s advisor must be a Chapter member (either a full year member or a half year member)
    2. Student must present either a poster or a talk at the annual ISES Conference; attendance only is not sufficient
    3. Student must be enrolled full-time at an eligible institution of higher education in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania
  3. Application Instructions
    1. Applications will begin to be accepted in March and will continue to be accepted through June 15th.
    2. Application materials must include:
      1. The application form with adviser signature in support of student conference attendance and to verify that there are other funding sources to cover the rest of student travel expenses
      2. A copy of the student’s CV
      3. The student’s accepted abstract
      4. A summary (1 – 2 pages in length) written by the student which must address:
        1. Student’s research goals
        2. How their research relates to broader exposure science issues, both current and future
        3. The benefits of attending the meeting and joining the ISES Tri-state Chapter
    3. All application materials mentioned above should be combined into one single PDF file, following the order mentioned above, and sent to Dr. Hua Qian by email (hua.qian@exxonmobil.com).
  4.  Application Evaluation
    1. A sub-committee of the ISES Tri-State Chapter Council will review applications; the number of committee members needed will be contingent upon the number of applications received, but will comprise at least three members
    2. Qualified applications will be scored based on the following criteria:
      1. Abstract: Significance of the abstract to advancing exposure science
      2. Essay: The student’s understanding and vision of the field of exposure science
      3. Student’s academic/professional activities and commitment to the field of exposure science, reflected in the student’s CV
    3. Each member of the committee will give a score ranging from 1 (fair) to 5 (excellent) for each criterion mentioned above (Section 4b). Each committee member will assign an overall score to an application, by summing the individual scores for each criterion. A final score will be assigned to each application by averaging the overall scores from each of the committee members.
    4. The application receiving the highest final score will be the winner of this award.
  5. The awardee is required to present his/her research at an upcoming ISES Tri-State Chapter meeting.
